Army Guns Down Suspected ULFA (I) Militant in Tinsukia, Foul Play Suspected

A suspected ULFA (I) militant was gunned down in an encounter with security forces in Upper Assamís Tinsukia district on Tuesday morning. The incident took place at Dirak Rangpuriya village near Kakopathar. Following certain intelligence inputs, army personnel had launched operation in  the remote village and came under attack of  the ULFA (I) militants who were hiding in a house owned by one Ajit Baruah. The army personnel retaliated in which a militant was killed.

Security personnel have recovered the body besides two pistols and ammunition from the spot. The slain militant is yet to be identified.

However, some locals have claimed that this might be a fake encounter. On conditions of anonymity, a local said, Ď Army has carried out fake encounters here in the past. We suspect foul play here as well. Two nine MM pistols were recovered from the slain youth. But, ULFA (I) militants donít generally use nine MM pistols.í

The locals also said that the youth didnít belong from the area and might be somewhere from Jorhat.
