A schoolboy has been shot dead by a fellow student at a school in India’s Madhya Pradesh state, police say.
The two boys, one aged 15 and the other 13, were students of a village school in Satna district. The older boy has been taken into custody, police say. He used his father’s locally made crude gun in the assault, police said. Last month, a 14-year-old boy was shot dead by two classmates at a school near Delhi. Incidents of gun crime at Indian schools and colleges are rare. The two boys started fighting after an exam at their government-run school in Chorwari village in the central state of Madhya Pradesh, police said. “The attacker fired at the junior student, identified as Dharmu, with a crude revolver. Dharmu was taken to hospital, where he died,” senior police officer AK Jharkaria, said.
‘Complaint ignored’
Dharmu’s mother told the BBC that the accused had earlier beaten up her son and that the school had failed to act on her complaint. The school authorities have not commented so far. In December, police arrested two boys at a private school outside the Indian capital for allegedly killing their classmate.
Police said the boys took turns to fire shots at 14-year-old Abhishek Tyagi after smuggling a gun into school. They said one of the boys had taken his father’s gun into the school and hidden it in a toilet.
The boys are being held in juvenile custody, accused of the killing.
