Gun-making gang busted, 8 held

 
BELGAUM: A gang manufacturing and selling country-made pistols at Raibag was arrested by a special police team of Chikkodi sub-division on Saturday. Six country-made pistols and 12 live cartridges were recovered from the gang. Eight persons along with two former Gram Panchayat members have been arrested.


Based on a tip-off, the police arrested two persons, Tammanna Ningappa Sutar (65) and Sadashiv Ramappa Kamble (55), both of Hidkal in Raibag near Borgaon in Chikkodi. The duo were going to Ichalkaranji in Maharashtra.


During interrogation the arrested revealed that Tammanna and his son, Babasab, were making the country-made pistols while Sadashiv was selling them. They also revealed the names of five customers to whom they had recently sold the weapons.


SP Hemant Nimbalkar said Tammanna and Sadashiv have been in the business since the last 10 years. The two former gram panchayat members have been identified as Rayappa Kenchappa Pujeri and Halappa Murari Dalwai and the other three are Prakash Halappa Gokak, Dattatreya Basappa Lohar and Parashram Saidu Bandgar all from Raibag taluk.


All the weapons seized are of 12 bore calibre and have been manufactured with crude materials, the SP said. The gang is suspected to have sold the weapons in rural parts of Belgaum district and also in Maharashtra.
