Police Bust Arms Racket in Etah

LUCKNOW:Authorities in Etah have stepped upon a major expose involving licensed arms dealers trading illicit firearms from government ordnance factories to Naxalites and criminals. And all this was going on in connivance with licensing authorities.

Investigations so far have revealed that as many as 30 firearms were found to be unaccounted for at a single arms shop in Etah within a period of three years. With a total of 166 such arms shops in the district, investigators believe that the total number of unaccounted firearms could touch thousands from Etah district alone.

The racket was detected when the investigators checking the stocks of one Raj Gun House situated in Jaithra locality of Etah found that though the gun house had purchased five rifles from Shiv Traders in Kakadeo area of Kanpur on June 11, 2007, they were unaccounted for in its stock register.

Similar anomalies were detected in another 25 guns purchased by the gun house from different dealers. Maximum anomalies were detected in connection with 13 single barrel guns (SBBL) purchased from Bajrang Traders in Kakadeo area of Kanpur.

Investigators believe that these firearms were procured after tampering with the purchase order issued by the district magistrate (DM) to an arms dealer who manages to sell off his entire quota of arms procured directly from the ordnance factories much before the expiry of the quota timeframe.
