US submits draft resolution to the Security Council requesting disarmament of Gaza

Sources in the United Nations reported that efforts were being made to pass a resolution in the Security Council in order to solve the recurrent wars between Israel and the Palestinian factions in Gaza.

The Lebanese newspaper An Nahar got a copy of the draft resolution submitted by the United States to the Security Council in this regard, which advocates to make the Gaza Strip a weapon-free zone. The only exception would be the security forces of the Palestinian Authority deployed in Gaza. The draft resolution also provides for the destruction of all tunnels on the border between Gaza and Egypt.

The project suggests dissolving the current situation in Gaza and giving the complete control of the Strip to the Palestinian Authority. This will include the opening of the border crossing points and the reconstruction of the area with the support of the international community. The reconstruction will include a process of monitoring and verification to prevent the use of dual-use building materials for non-peaceful purposes.

The project also calls for other states to take urgent measures to prevent the entry of prohibited weapons and materials into Gaza, using surveillance ships and aircrafts for this purpose.

Senior diplomats of the Security Council informed that these efforts are aimed at the adoption of the draft before the end of the second round of negotiations between the Israelis and Palestinians sponsored by Egypt.
