Centre Bans NSCN-K for Five Years

The Union government on Wednesday banned Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) Khaplang faction for five years More than
three months after the underground organisation carried out the worst attack on the Indian Army in three decades, killing eighteen soldiers in Chandel district of Manipur.

The decision to ban NSCN (K) was taken at the Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The ban under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) will be in force for five years. It was only recently that the National Investigation
Agency had announced a cash reward for information relating to two NSCN(K) leaders, Niki Sumi and S S Khaplang.

The Union home ministry had submitted a detailed note and presentation on the outfit’s seeking a ban on it. It blamed the outfit for unilaterally abrogating the ceasefire with the Centre.

The outfit, led by S S Khaplang will now figure among 38 banned organisations, including the Indian Mujahideen and ISIS.
