MSCW gears up to fight violence against women

Imphal, July 01 2016 : Newly appointed Chairperson of Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) Dr K Sobita has called upon all the relevant Government agencies, civil society organisations, NGOs and the general public to stand united and fight violence against women.

Speaking to media persons at her office inside Imphal West DC office complex, Lamphelpat today, Dr Sobita said that violence against women should be battled on different fronts and at different levels.

“The commission will soon focus on massive awareness-raising and community mobilization campaign to help tackle violence against women in the State.

We’ll launch it in Bishnupur district first,” Dr Sobita said.

She said the planned campaign will cover all the hill districts of the State.

Dr Sobita also highlighted the need for opening a women helpline centre to prevent crime against women and child.

“We also need to take up security measures to help reduce such crimes.

Women should be self-reliant too,” she said.

Violence against women in the State has been growing up in recent years, but conviction rate continues to be dismally low.

The State registered over 400 cases of rape between 1999 and 2013 and there were over 2000 cases of crime against women.

Meanwhile, Ramji Khul Development Committee, Ramji Women Welfare Association and Ramji Youth Club have felicitated newly inducted Manipur State Commision for Women member Ranjita Golmei.

The felicitation function was graced by Ramji Khul Khullakpa Gangguilung Gangmei and Khunbu Kabungba Kamei as chief guest and president respectively.

Speaking at the gathering, Ranjita Golmei pledged to fight for justice on behalf of all the victims of violence against women.
