Group to aid victims – Delhi gets support centre

Guwahati, Jan. 15: New Delhi has got a new support centre to assist women facing sexual violence and racial discrimination.

Manipur-based
rights activist Binalakshmi Nepram, who leads the Control Arms
Foundation of India and Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network, joined
hands with Multiple Action Research Group (MARG), another NGO, and
inaugurated the support centre yesterday.

The support centre,
situated at Safdarjung Enclave of South Delhi, will have trained woman
counsellors, a psychiatric and a legal expert to provide immediate
support to the victims of sexual violence and racial discrimination.

“The
aim of this support centre is to provide relief, rehabilitation and
legal assistance to survivors of racial and sexual violence. It will
also act as a place for regular interaction, discussion on women
rights, human rights, livelihood options, government schemes, and most
importantly, provide psychological support and handholding for legal
assistance to individual women victim of sexual violence and racial
discrimination. The centre will try to act as an intermediary between
the governments and communities,” a statement from Control Arms
Foundation of India said today.

Nepram has been working to assist
the victims of violence in Manipur and parts of the Northeast and
providing livelihood options. She has been demanding that women should
be given opportunity to be part of peace-building initiatives and
treaties with the rebel groups in the region.

The NGO has been
working in the field of addressing gender based violence in conflict
areas for the past five years. The NGO has already opened similar
support centres for women in Tripura, Manipur and Assam.

Nepram
said the support centre was opened in New Delhi as part of its
initiative to assist women victims of violence given the fact that the
national capital registered 284 per cent increase in rape cases between
2011 (572 cases) and 2015 (2,199 cases).

“New Delhi reported the
highest rate of rapes in 2015 – 23.7 per 1,00,000 population. The
conviction rate of people accused of crime against women in the country
stood at a dismal 21.7 per cent last year and 35 per cent in Delhi.
Crimes against people from the Northeast living in the national capital
have increased by around 270 per cent in two years. Of the total
number of cases registered last year, there were eight cases of murder
and two of attempt to murder, 14 of rape, 16 of molestation and as many
as 21 cases related to obscenity and stalking,” said a statement.
