GUWAHATI: Two years ago, Rohan and his brother Angel were taken away from Sadiya to Arunachal Pradesh by an ‘uncle’ from their locality.
Before they could realize what was happening, they were engaged as domestic helps. On Saturday, Assam Police in a joint operation with their counterpart in Arunachal Pradesh rescued Angel from Lower Dibang Valley and Rohan from Pasighat.
“Their father, a daily wage worker called Israil Bag, had sold them to a trafficker in 2014 for Rs 5,000. Israil was sick and unemployed at the time. Taking advantage of the situation, a trafficker offered him money and said his kids would get jobs in Arunachal Pradesh. He was an easy prey,” said a Sadiya Police officer. A search operation is currently on to nab the unidentified ‘uncle’. The two households in Arunachal Pradesh who employed them are being questioned by the cops as well.
With over 1,494 cases of trafficking in 2015, Assam recorded the highest number of cases of human trafficking in the country. Assam also has the highest number of child trafficking cases (1317). The track record of action being taken in such cases is a dismal one. While 1,552 persons were arrested in Assam in 2015 for involvement to human trafficking networks, police had filed chargesheets in only 365 cases against 424 accused, of whom only eight were convicted.
Recurring floods, militancy, poverty, lack of employment avenues are often behind such cases. The chairperson of the Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Runumi Gogoi, said, “The school dropout rate in the tea garden areas is as high as 75%. Because of the lack of education and economic backwardness, it becomes easier for traffickers to lure children and youths from these areas.”

Australian politicians are almost always opting to
fly with Qantas on taxpayer-funded trips, despite
Virgin offering cheaper tickets.
Federal MPs flew with the national carrier for 80 per cent of work trips last year despite it not always being the cheapest route,
according to travel data provided to the government.
While politicians and their staffers are required to book
the cheapest flight, it also has to be the most efficient, with Qantas offering the most routes
between major cities.
MPs are banned from accruing frequent flyer points on taxpayer-funded trips like ordinary
Aussies can, but they can can receive lifetime status credits, which allows access to airport lounges and flight
upgrades.
‘How else can one explain the extraordinary dominance of
Qantas in securing bookings by parliamentarians
and their staff?’ Myriam Robin wrote in an opinion piece for the Australian Financial Review.
‘There’s nothing like accruing status credits on someone
else’s dime.’
Transport Minister Catherine King has since committed to a review of flight bookings by government
officials which will be conducted by the Department of Finance this
year, despite there being just two months left of 2024.
Politicians’ preference for Qantas may also be put down to the airline’s exclusive invite-only ‘Chairman’s Lounge’.

are suitably discreet.
Though, once inside, the designer lounges are immediately more ostentatious, with free à la
carte fine dining, table service, a decadent selection of wines and Champagne and a
discreet army of dedicated lounge attendants.
Membership to the club is ‘priceless’ – it cannot be bought for
any amount of money nor obtained via any amount of frequent flyers
points.
Instead, each member is hand-picked and approved
by the company’s chief executive and chairman.
