Bengaluru suspected racial attack: Three arrested for assaulting man from Manipur

BENGALURU, Aug 30, 2017: A 32 year old man from Manipur who was allegedly assaulted on Monday night at Bengaluru is still undergoing medical treatment at HOSMAT hospital.

S Paukhanmung sustained head injuries and has a fracture on his left ankle. Meanwhile, Police have registered a case in this regards and three arrests have been made so far. Two of the accused are from Orissa and one of the accused is from Kerala.”

Paukhanmung who was working as a house keeping staff at the Jayanagar branch of Hotel Empire came to the city about 3 months ago.

The matter flared up after the victim was allegedly slapped by the hotel manager for protesting against the ‘one-sided’ attitude of the hotel management by imposing a fine only on him for smoking on the hotel terrace.

According to Yambem Arun Meetei, General Secretary of the Manipuri Meitei Association Bangalore (MMAB) and a member of the Manipuri diaspora, first incident took place on August 27 when he was smoking on the hotel terrace. The victim was fined Rs. 100 by the Floor manager because he violated hotel policy.  He was also allegedly slapped by the operations manager when he protested as to why he was the only one fined for smoking.

On August 28 after dinner, he met the operations manager and questioned him as to why he was slapped the previous day. “This led to an argument and then things got really heated up with many others joining in assaulting Paukhanmung,” says Yambem adding that the Branch manager Sameer beat him with a cricket stump and he was left in a room for some hours without any medical attention.

The victim’s friends alleged that the assault began at around 9pm and went on till 12 in the night. He was finally shifted to a nearby hospital at 3 am for first-aid.

Meanwhile, hotel authorities counter-alleged that the victim was drunk when he came for dinner and got into a fight. Mohammed Haneef, Public Relations Officer, Empire Group of Hotels, claimed that after the victim broke the rule of no smoking in the hotel premises and was fined Rs 100, he immediately went to the kitchen, took off his uniform and shoved the floor manager. That is when the Operations manager got into a fight with the victim for allegedly mistreating the female floor manager. This took place on August 27.

After this issue was sorted out, on August 28 the victim allegedly came drunk for dinner and at around 9 pm, he questioned the operations manager on why he interfered the previous day and that is when the issue got out of hand.
