Minister P Chidambaram felt the law was not needed, but could not convince the Defence Ministry.

Demanding repeal of the Armed Forces Special (Powers) Act in Jammu and Kashmir at the earliest, former Union minister and senior Congress leader Saifuddin Soz on Saturday said that then Home Minister P Chidambaram felt the law was not needed, but could not  convince the Defence Ministry.

“I had discussed this matter with then Home Minister P Chidambaram.

He felt this law was not needed at all and that it brought a bad name to the country. He had lamented the fact that while he had convinced all his colleagues on the repeal of AFSPA, he failed to convince the Defence Ministry,” Soz said.
