Centre Renews AFSPA in Nagaland for Six Months

July 1: The Central government has extended the Armed Forces Special Powers Acts (AFSPA) for another six months in Nagaland stating that the state is “in a disturbed and dangerous condition”.

In its notification, the Union Home Ministry said that the whole of Nagaland is in a disturbed and dangerous condition and hence the AFSPA will remain in effect for the next six months.

“Now, therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 3 of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, the central government hereby declares that whole of the said state to be a ‘disturbed area’ for a period of six months with effect from June 30, 2016 for the purpose of that Act,” the Ministry notification stated.

The announcement comes three days after the death of Isak Chishi Swu, chairman of Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM). According to officials, killings, extortion, factional clashes and other subversive activities have been going on in different parts of Nagaland at the behest of a few insurgent groups and so it was necessary to extend AFSPA for another six months.
