Meghalaya: Jaintia Hills body recovery – Woman raped and murdered, Police confirmed

JOWAI, March 3: The young woman whose body was found along NH-6 (earlier NH-44) on February 22 was raped and murdered, police confirmed on Thursday.

Khliehriat police said though no one was arrested so far, they have got some lead and “we hope that the culprit will be arrested soon”.

The woman, identified as Binora Dohtdong (25) of Lawpyllun in Ri Bhoi, was buried on Thursday.

Before 2013, Binora used to work as maid in the village and its neighbourhood.

“She visited us once in a while and she used to tell us that she is working in Ladrymbai”, her eldest sister, Airilda Dohtdong said.  She told that Binora has a nine-year-old daughter, Bansara, who stayed with the youngest sister, Ribiphul. Bansara’s father was also unknown. Ribiphul has been taking care of Bansara since she was two years of age.

The police said Binora worked in a tea-stall and a liquor stall in Ladrymbai area. She was also an alcoholic and would often lose her job for her habit.

On February 21, she came to an illegal liquor stall located at Datsimpein Ladrymbai where she used to work earlier. She came to meet the liquor stall owner and asked to allow her to work with her and also promised to give up drinking.

On the same night, she disappeared and in the next morning her body was found from the roadside at Dkhiah East. The police said her body must have been thrown out of a vehicle.

Binora’s sisters told police that they did not have enough money to bring the body to the village and asked them to bury it.

The body was buried in the land of a prominent resident of Ladrymbai, Jobly Dkhar, in the presence of a woman police sub-inspector along with some police personnel, her two sisters, two friends and the headman.
