81 from NE raped in Delhi since 2014

Guwahati, March 29: Altogether 81 women from the Northeast have been raped in Delhi since 2014, Union minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju told the Rajya Sabha today.

Replying to a question by Assam MP Ranee Narah, Rijiju said 118 people from the region faced harassment, 24 suffered eve-teasing and 17 became victims of discrimination in New Delhi between 2014 and March 15, 2017.

On the steps being taken to prevent atrocities and discrimination against people from the Northeast, Rijiju said the Special Police Unit for North East Region (Spuner) of New Delhi police was fully operational and Rs 24 crore had been recently sanctioned for the construction of a new building for Spuner on 1.21 acres of land allotted by the Union ministry of urban development.

“Under a special drive for recruitment of people from the Northeast, 401 personnel, including 118 women, have been recruited (by New Delhi police) from eight northeastern states,” Rijiju said.

He said a Facebook page, Delhi police for North East Folks, has been launched, which includes helpline facility, Dial 1093, contact details of the nodal officers, emergency officers and other officers concerned.
