Meghalaya: JNV Nongstoin teacher faces termination for sexually harassing girl students

NONGSTOIN, April 15: The courage of the students have cost the career of a male teacher, accused of sexual harassment, dearly when he was terminated from service after he was found guilty.

Disclosing this information, West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Arunkumar Kembhavi said that a teacher identified as Vishwajit Jha who teaches PGT Physics at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya school in Nongstoin, West Khasi Hills district was prima facie found to be guilty of sexual harassment.

“The girl students were courageous enough to come forward to report the matter to one of our Executive Magistrates during routine inspection on March 23,” Kembhavi said.

Based on an initial inquiry report, a committee was constituted comprising of Extra Assistant Commissioner, District Social Welfare Officer and Deputy Labour commissioner, West Khasi Hills district.

A detailed enquiry was conducted on March 29 and after the committee confirmed the harassment, the teacher was immediately terminated from the service w.e.f April 10.

The district administration has recommended the JNV Samiti Shillong to lodge an FIR against the teacher under relevant provisions of The Protection of Children From Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO), 2012.

“It seems it was going on for a long time. it was not reported though. The offence that he committed are punishable under section 11 of the POCSO Act,” he said.

However, the school is yet to file any complaint with the police in this regard.

“This action should serve as a warning to all who think that they can get away with any kind of abuse and exploitation of children,” asserted the DC while calling upon any children who suffer such exploitation silently to come forward to inform the authority adding that “The law takes care of you.”
