Meghalaya: 14 year old gang raped in East Garo Hills; juvenile amongst two caught

TURA, May 1: The unending saga of rapes within the state of Meghalaya continued once again with the rape of another 14 year old girl near the town of Williamnagar in East Garo Hills allegedly by people belonging to the same clan.

The incident took place on Apr 27 at about 3:30 pm. The duo responsible for the act, one of whom was a 14 year old teen were later caught by villagers a day after the incident before being handed over to the police after a sound thrashing.

According to sources, the girl was on her way home in Dinamgre from her school when she was waylaid by two persons, identified as Rambong T Sangma (45) and the teen after which she was sexually assaulted by the duo.

The victim was later rushed to the Williamnagar Civil Hospital by family members after the incident and her state is said to be stable. A case of rape was filed by the family in Williamnagar police station on the same day.

Interestingly, immediately after the incident, the two culprits gave the villagers as well as the EGH police the slip but were later caught by the villagers and thrashed for the act. They were later handed over to the police and a formal arrest made. They had been hiding close to the village itself.

“This act of the two is hugely condemned. The girl belonged to the same clan and is unthinkable what they did. We hope they are given the strictest punishment for the crime,” said social activist Tattara Marak, a resident of Williamnagar in East Garo Hills.
