SC lawyer gets death threat in Manipur

New Delhi: The guards have changed in the north eastern state of Manipur. But disrupting elements refuse to die down where feeling of insecurity grips the common people.

A senior Supreme Court lawyer is alleged to have received a death threat over phone when he was on a visit to the capital city of Imphal to conduct a sensational murder case in Manipur High Court.

In his recent letter to the Union home secretary, senior lawyer Utsav Singh Bains alleged that he received a phone call from a person who asked him not to proceed with the murder case where   state chief minister BN Singh’s son’s name surfaced.

The senior lawyer who has been providing legal aid to victim  Irom Rogers family members said,”I had visited Imphal for the same from  March 17, 2017 to 19 March, 2017 and as I returned from Manipur, I received calls on my whatsapp number +919815907986 from 950917727856 on March 22, 2017 at around 3:30 am in the morning,”

According to Basin, the person who spoke in broken English with a Manipuri accent, said that he was calling from  banned Peoples Liberation Army ( PLA, )Manipur and NSCN(IM )and that he shouldn’t go ahead with the case where the accused is the chief minister’s son.

Bains said, “ I informed superintendent of Police (CID) based in Imphal about the threatening  call and decided not to go to Imphal and  engaged a local lawyer for the appeal at the Manipur High Court.”

He added,”Over the last one month, every lawyer I and my colleagues at the Supreme Court contacted at the Manipur High Court refused to engage as a lawyer in this case.”
