Supreme Court Directs CBI to Investigate Manipur Fake Encounters

July 14, 2017: In what can be said as a ray of hope for the victims of Manipur fake encounters in getting justice; Supreme Court on Friday asked CBI to investigate 62 cases of alleged fake encounters in Manipur.

Hearing a case related to 1528 Manipur fake encounters allegedly perpetrated by Indian Army and Police, Justice Madan Lokur and Justice UU Lalit instructed the CBI to investigate 62 cases fake encounters took place in Manipur over the years.

Out 62 cases, there are 28 cases where Indian Army is allegedly the perpetrator. The apex court has directed the CBI to form an SIT to probe the cases. SC has also directed the CBI to update the apex court on weekly basis. Next hearing is on January 28.

It may be mentioned here that, Manipur falls under the purview of AFSPA.
