The Centre had taken up the issue of China supplying arms to Naga insurgent groups during talks with the Khaplang faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland in New Delhi recently.
Disclosing this to The Telegraph, C. Singson, foreign kilonser (minister) of the faction, said Naveen Verma, joint secretary (Northeast), ministry of home affairs, and Raman Srivastava, special secretary (internal security) in the home ministry, had discussed the issue during the closed door meeting with the NSCN (K) leaders.
Wangtin Konyak, deputy kilonser for home of the NSCN (K), also attended the meeting along with senior members of the outfit.
Singson said the Centre has taken strong exception to the supply of the arms to the Naga rebel groups. “They had raised the issue during the meeting but we denied the charge,” the NSCN (K) leader said.
Singson is also the supervisor of the ceasefire supervisory board of the NSCN (K). “I don’t want to talk any more on this (arms supply) issue,” Singson said. “Why should we tell them where we get our arms from?”
Union home secretary G.K. Pillai had recently said there were reports that China was arming Naga militants and NSCN (I-M) leaders were visiting the neighbouring country frequently.
He, however, said India was capable of tackling China and need not worry about that country supplying arms to NSCN cadres. Sources here said recently NSCN (I-M) chairman Isak Chishi Swu visited Beijing and Yunan province of China.
Besides the NSCN factions, Ulfa is also known to shop for arms in China and the outfit’s commander-in-chief, Paresh Barua, is said to be in Yunan province at present to clinch an arms deal.
Chinese-made arms are popular with most rebel groups of the Northeast, especially AK-47s and grenades.
NSCN (K) sources said they, too, procure arms from abroad but are always tight-lipped about the suppliers. However, sources said the outfit procures arms from Chinese arm dealers and from ethnic Karen and Kachin rebels in Myanmar.
For the NSCN (I-M), most of the arms are brought to Nagaland from Bangladesh.
