North East women peace congregation in Imphal

MANIPUR UPDATE NEWS/IMPHAL, Mar 25 :

Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh
today inaugurated first North East Indian women peace congregation in
Imphal today. The congregation was jointly organized by the Control arms
foundation and India and Manipur women gun survivors’ network (MWGSN)
and supported by European Union and Welthungerhilfe.

Speaking on the occasion Chief Minister
said that he is confident of regaining its lost trust, love, peace and
harmony once again and enjoyed the bountiful natural gifts bestowed to
us by nature.

Lauding activities of the activities of
MWGSN, Ibobi said, “I really appreciate the effort put up by renowned
personalities to sensitise the government as well as all stakeholders on
the issue.”

While the government is takin all
possible measures to protect the rights and priviledges of womenfolks,
he added it is a welcome step that this organization is also taking
measures in supporting the victims in terms of psychological and
economical way to uphold dignity in the society.

Hemochandra, Counsellor Theralf Stenvold of Royal Norwegian Embassy, and
Project Coordinator of Welthungerhilfe Neha Naqvi besides Prof Kshetri
Bimola of Manipur University, Editor Aja Valley Rose, Pratibha Brahma of
North East Research and social work Bodoland, Executive Editor of
Eastern Sentinel Kenter Riba, Advocate Saturpa Bhatarcharjee of Legal
rights forum Shillong, Rose Mangshi of Kuki Mothers’ Association, Muslim
women leader Sitara Begum, Womenfolk organization leaders S Momon,
Lourembam Nganbi, Rinyui Chon of Ukhrul district women institute of
Microfinance also attended the congregation.

According to the organizer, the aim of
the congregation is to meet and strategise to develop a regional action
plan on women peace and security with reference to United Nations
Security council resolution 1325 which will be taken up with relevant
stakeholders of Government of India.

The day’s congregation is the culmination
of women network meetings held across all the eight states of the North
East India and to strategise for absolute participation of women in
decision making forums and space, socio-economic empowerment of women of
the region, gender sensitization of the state security forces and need
for inclusion of peace education the curriculum of the educational
institutions.
