1 AR man killed, 2 hurt in attack

IMPHAL, Oct 25: One Assam Rifles personnel was killed and two others injured in a gunfight with suspected PLA cadres at Satang area near Kwatha village under Moreh police station in Chandel district today morning.

According to a reliable source, troops of 24 Assam Rifles (B-Coy) who were on a road opening duty came under heavy firing at the area at around 6 am.

One AR personnel died on the spot while two others suffered injury in the attack.

The AR team immediately retaliated and a fierce gunbattle ensued for around an hour between the two sides, added the source.

The militants used sophisticated weapons in carrying out the attack, the source said.

A reinforcement team of Assam Rifles rushed to the spot after getting information about the incident and conducted a search operation in and around the incident site.
During the operation, the security team recovered one radio set, one pistol and two live IEDs.

However, no arrest has been reported till the time of filing this report.

The injured personnel were airlifted to 153 Military Hospital, Leimakhong.

The deceased has been identified as Rifleman No 5009333 Paokholet Baite (31) son of Jamsei, Moreh Ward No 7.

CRPF troops attacked : CRPF troops were attacked this evening by someunidentified persons by lobbing a hand grenade at RIMS Road but the grenade failed to go off.

According to information culled from the spot, some troops of 86 CRPF were heading towards Imphal city in a mini-truck when they a hand grenade was lobbed at their vehicle near Padma Medicare, RIMS Road at around 6.45 pm.

The CRPF personnel who came under the ineffective attack were on their way to replace other personnel who were assigned duties in

different parts of Imphal city today.

The hand grenade which failed to go off was later retrieved by a bomb disposal squad of Manipur Police.

Vehicular traffic along the busy RIMS Road was also blocked for a brief period by police following the failed attack.
