Manipuri woman alleges sexual exploitation by army officer in Odisha

Sambalpur, Jan 28:

A woman from Manipur has levelled serious charges of cheating and sexual torture against a colonel of the Indian Army currently posted at the NCC group headquarters in Odisha’s Sambalpur.

A case has been registered at the Sambalpur Mahila Police Station in this connection following the Manipuri woman filing a written complaint against Colonel A N Singh with Sambalpur SP Akhilesh Singh.

“We have sent her complaint for registering an FIR. Then we will investigate the matter and take appropriate legal action as required in the matter,” said Sambalpur SP.

“We were having a love affair since 2013. We have lived together for some days. Families of both of us were aware of it. He had promised to marry me in December. Later he postponed it and now he is saying he can’t marry me. I have come here without informing my family. I have come alone,” said the woman who was sobbing with tears welled up in her eyes.

The victim woman has alleged in her complaint that the colonel by promising to marry her had sexually exploited her. She claimed that on arriving at Sambalpur on January 22 she had been staying at the Officer’s Mess but had left the place after she was beaten up and tortured by the colonel’s elder sister.

Sambalpur SP has questioned the colonel and his sister about the allegation after calling them to his office. However, the colonel was not available for his comments.

Notably, the colonel is a widower, with his wife being dead a few years back. He has a son.
