Manipur social welfare minister assures actions against people involved in rape cases

IMPHAL, April 21: Minister for Social Welfare and Cooperation Nemcha Kipgen has strongly condemned the recent gang rape of two teenage girls on April 14 during Cheiraoba festival and said that the culprits involved in such grievous and inhuman act should be punished so as to avoid recurrence of such ghastly incident.

Ms Nemcha Kipgen said here today that police acted and apprehended the suspects. She also raised concern over such crime and appealed to all the young ladies to remain alert. The minister had also given assurance to extend all possible assistance to the girls.

Meanwhile, a team of Manipur State Commission for Women led by its chairperson Dr K Sobita Devi and members along with chairperson, Manipur state social welfare board today enquired into the case and met the victims and their family members at Imphal. Necessary medical examination of the victims had been done after the consent of the victims. Both the victims were now staying with their respective parents. Chairperson of child welfare committee, Imphal east district, child protection officer and women police station, Imphal East also launched a manhunt to nab the culprits.

So far, six persons have been arrested and are detained by now under the Porompat police, Imphal East against the FIR No. 15(4)2017WPS-IE u/s 376D/120-B/363/34IPC and 6 POCSO Act 2012 and interrogation is under process.

Police said the two girls who were with their friends were kidnapped by a gang during the celebration of Cheiraoba festival and later raped. A male friend of the two girls managed to inform police about the matter which led to massive man hunt to rescue the girls and nab the perpetrators.
