One AR JCO killed in attack, RPF claims hand

IMPHAL, Oct 26 : A day after one AR jawan was killed and two others were injured in a gun-fight with suspected militants at Satang area near Kwatha village under Moreh PS, a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) of 44 Assam Rifles was killed and three personnel suffered injuries in a militant attack that occurred today morning near the waiting shed of Khoikai village under Kamjong subdivision of Ukhrul district.

A source said that a JCO of the AR reportedly died on the spot and three other personnel have been seriously injured in the attack. The injured personnel were airlifted to 153 Military Hospital, Leimakhong for treatment.

The Revolutionary People’s Front has claimed responsibility for the attack.

In a statement issued to the press, the publicity secretary of the outfit, Roben Khuman said that two personnel were killed when cadres of the tactical command of the outfit attacked a team of 44 Assam Rifles at a spot in between Khoikai and Sampui village in Ukhrul district today at about 9.30 am.

One AK rifle used by the Assam Rifles fell into the possession of the cadres, claimed the outfit and added that the rest of the personnel ran helter skelter as soon as the attack started.

Acknowledging the encouragement they have received from the public, the outfit recalled the saying of the ancestors who maintained that it is better to live for a single moment as a free people than to live a life of subjugation.

The outfit further said that the battle against the enemy will proceed and urged all to join hands to save the Manipuri people.

The source said that a team of 44 Assam Rifles who were on ROP along the road came under heavy attack from suspected militants at around 4.30 am just when the AR troops reached a waiting shed located at Khoikai village under Kamjong subdivision.

Sources also said that three Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) were first triggered when the AR personnel reached the waiting shed.

The suspected militants later resorted to indiscriminate firing at the AR troops using sophisticated weapons.

The militants retreated after the Assam Rifles personnel retaliated.

Sources also said that one Junior Commissioned Officer of 44 Assam Rifle died at the spot in the attack. Three other AR personnel suffered injuries. The injured Assam Rifles personnel were soon airlifted to 153 Military Hospital for treatment.

The place where the attack was carried out is said to have been affected by the recent landslide and is in a dilapidated condition.

Soon after the attack, the Assam Rifles personnel carried out search operation in the nearby and surrounding areas.

However, no official report is available from the Kamjong Police Station regarding the incident till the time of filing this report.

It is also pertinent to mention that one AR man was killed while two others received injuries in suspected militant attack yesterday at Kwatha area under Moreh PS in Chandel district.
