9 rescued from human traffickers in Manipur

IMPHAL, Mar 29: Eight boys and a teenage girl were rescued from traffickers by anti-human trafficking unit of Manipur police in separate operations at Imphal Airport, an official source said Wednesday.

The eight boys are suspected to be from Myanmar while the 16-year-old girl is from Manipur’s Churachandpur district. They were rescued from the Imphal airport while they were about to take flights to different destinations outside the state with fake documents.
The Anti-human trafficking cell of the state police intercepted the eight boys at the airport on March 27 while trying to take a flight to Chennai via Kolkata without proper documents.

While the 16-year-old girl was rescued from the same airport where she was to board a flight to Bangkok via Kolkata with fake documents on Tuesday, the source said.

All the boys (aged between 18 to 20) were trying to board a Chennai bound flight via Kolkata without any adult to guide them. They possessed Adhaar cards which later turned out to be fake. On further verification, it was found out that two of them were already in Chennai.

Later, police handed them to Imphal West Child Welfare Committee (CWC) for further necessary steps for onward handing over to CWC Churachandpur.

The boys were handed over to Churachandpur CWC as their addresses in the fake Adhaar cards were in Churachandpur district.
Sources said that CWC who verified them found errors in the date of birth of the child and identity of the sex in most of the Adhaar cards they possessed.

Moreover, no foreign passports were possessed by the boys. Authority of the CWC has lodged a suo-moto case to investigate into it, the source added.

The rescue of 16-year-old girl at the Imphal airport by the same anti-trafficking unit of the state police came up barely a day after the eight boys were intercepted.

The source alleged that the girl hailing from Churachandpur district was about to board a Kolkata-bound flight for onward journey to Bangkok.

An Adhaar card and school certificates possessed by the girl turned out to be fake during verification by the police team and Child Line in Imphal.

Preliminary investigation of the police revealed that the girl was to be taken to Bangkok where she would be employed as domestic worker. She was accompanied by a woman from Senapati district who had earlier involved in human trafficking case.
The woman, however, managed to get away from the airport sensing the presence of the police personnel, the source said. Singjamei police of Imphal West district registered a FIR for further investigation into the case and the girl has been sent to the juvenile observation home in Imphal.

Human trafficking, particularly child trafficking, has been on the rise in Manipur though it largely remained elusive from the public domain. The alarming rate is evident from the fact that 62 cases of child trafficking were recorded from 2013 to June 2016.
