10 honoured for contribution to NE

Guwahati, Sept. 7: Ten individuals from the eight northeastern states were given The Telegraph Northeast Excellence Awards 2017 here this evening for their contribution to the development of the region.

The Excellence Awards 2017 is an exclusive platform to honour the dedication and perseverance of these individuals who have used vision, creativity, business acumen and innovation to lead their respective states and the region towards growth and development.

The awardees were from Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Sikkim and Meghalaya. They included three from Assam – Lakhimi Baruah, Sanjukta Parashar and Hironmoy Gogoi.

Lakhimi Baruah, the first recipient of the award, is the founder and managing director of Konoklata Mahila Urban Co-operative Bank Ltd based in Jorhat town of Assam, the only bank in the region where all the employees and shareholders are women.

The customers of the bank comprise women from the underprivileged sections of society. The bank had earlier won the best-performing co-operative institution from the state government last year.

The second awardee was Neichute Doulo from Nagaland. He is the CEO of Entrepreneurs Associate, an organisation providing training and finance to Naga youths for self-employment. He gave up his job as a college lecturer in 2002 to become an entrepreneur. Till now, 7,000 youths have been provided finance to engage in self-employment ventures through which around 50,000 people have benefited indirectly.

The next recipient, Binalakshmi Nepram, is a crusader for armed violence reduction, founder of the Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network, secretary-general of the Control Arms Foundation of India and convener of the Northeast India Women Initiative for Peace. She helps women whose husbands or sons have died because of violence. Kashi Nath Jena, the fourth recipient, is a professor-cum-controller of examinations at Tripura Central University. He was awarded for his work on intellectual property rights of indigenous technology. He is also engaged in a project for economic empowerment of indigenous women in Tripura.

An organic tea grower from Arunachal Pradesh, Basamlu Krisikro, known as the Tea Lady of Arunachal, was the fifth awardee. She has weaned away 16 families from illegal cultivation of opium to growing organic tea.

The other awardees are Sangthankima of Mizoram, a social activist who has worked against alcoholism and for the welfare of the differently abled, Sandeep Gurung from Sikkim, a fashion designer working for the environment and making creations out of recycled waste, and Ridhualang Gotpoh of Meghalaya, who is known for upholding the musical traditions of the Northeast.

The awards were given out, among others, by CEO and MD of ABP Pvt Ltd D.D. Purkayastha, vice-president, The Telegraph, Dhruba Mukherjee, chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of the Assam Assembly, Rajdeep Gowala, and PWD minister Parimal Suklabaidya.
