MPs pledge to work on reducing gun violence in India

New Delhi, Jun 5: Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence was successfully observed on June 5, 2008 at the deputy chairman`s hall, Constitution Club in New Delhi. The function was graced by Dr Thokchom Meinya, MP, Lok Sabha. Other MPs present included Francis Fathome and Dr Karan Singh Yadav of the Lok Sabha.

The distinguished MPs commended the control arms movement that is going on in the country and reiterated that as parliamentarians their role is to legislate so that they can influence thought and practice with regard to solutions.

The parliamentarians pledged that they would create a core group of parliamentarians who will work together on issues of gun violence and work towards the creation of a national commission on small arms in this monsoon session of Parliament, starting July 2008.

A series of posters calling for an end to gun violence was released on the occasion by the Dr Thokchom Meinya. Later, India`s former ambassador to the United Nations, Arundhati Ghose released a book based on the proceedings of the February 6, 2008 conference on redrafting India`s gun laws.

The other distinguished speakers who spoke on the occasion included A Varatha Raja Perumal, Dr Bibhu Routray, Baban Prakash and Reena Mutum of the Manipuri Women Gun Survivors Network.
